The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted pit. The pit closely matches the area of plot 287.

A roughly L-shaped former extractive pit circa 120 by 80 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, the pit closely corresponded with an irregularly L-shaped shaped plot depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe, which appeared to incorporate two ponds. This plot was depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map as an orchard.
The visible earthworks are interpreted as the remains of a large extractive pit that had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century, with the deepest parts of the pit subsequently used as ponds, the remainder utilised as an orchard. The dwelling of Rushlands was situated in the shallower eastern edge of this pit.
