Two curvilinear pits were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and aerial photographs of 2002, as earthworks either side of a road to the south-east of Higher Leyhill Farm, Payhembury parish
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pits features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, the D-shaped pit circa 40 metres in diameter abutting the north-west side of the road does match a small plot depicted on both the Tithe Map for Payhembury and the OS First Edition 25 inch map, possibly as a small copse on the latter. The oval pit circa 50 metres across, some 40 metres to the east was not depicted on either map.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of extractive pits that had probably passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.
