Possible extraction pits of post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, at Valley Farm. The earthworks are irregular and sub-oval in shape, range in size from between 14m to 44m in length and occupy an area of approximately 0.93 hectares of moderate northwest facing slopes of a scarp. The earthworks should, however, be viewed with some degree of caution and it is possible they are (in part) the result of natural slumping.
