Summary
The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage in the post-medieval period or 19th century were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south east facing slopes south west of Elmfield Park Farm, Buckerell parish.

Narrow ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The visible earthwork banks were spaced circa 6 metres apart and crossed the contours of the slope.
They fell within a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in an orchard dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The plot had been cleared of all tree planting by 1947 and the orchard had therefore probably passed out of use in the first half of the 20th century.
