Summary

The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage in the post-medieval period or 19th century were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the east-facing slopes immediately north and east of Weston House, Awliscombe parish.

The plot is depicted as an orchard.

The orchard remained moderately planted. The banks were not identifieable as earthworks.

Narrow ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The visible earthwork banks were spaced circa 5 metres apart and crossed the contours of the slope.
The visible earthworks fell a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in orchards dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The plot remained largely unchanged in area and moderately planted in 1947. The plot remains very lightly planted on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014 and might continue in use as an orchard on a domestic scale.
