Summary

The remains of ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage probably in the post-medieval period or 19th century were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-facing slopes west of Parklands, Awliscombe parish.

The visible earthworks fell within a larger plot depicted as an orchard.

Narrow ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1993. The visible earthwork banks were spaced circa 5 metres apart and crossed the contours of the slope over an area of circa 0.2 hectares.
The banks are comparable to others visible in this area that have been interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in an orchard dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The plot in which they were visible was not depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as evidence of an orchard that had passed out of use by circa 1890.
The banks are not visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and have probably been levelled.
