Ridges were visible as parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The visible earthwork banks were approximately 7 metres wide and were spaced up to 9 metres apart. They were visible over an area of circa 2.2 hectares of south-east facing slope.
Although significantly broader, the visible banks are comparable to others visible in this area that have been interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in an orchard dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century.
The banks do not correspond with a plot depicted as an orchard on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The Tithe apportionment for Awliscombe instead lists this plot (460) as Aller Grove, and lists its state of cultivation as ‘Allers’, interpreted as meaning Alder trees.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for the cultivation of an Alder plantation that passed out of use prior to circa 1880.
