A curvilinear bank and ditch 4 to 6 metres wide and a roughly rectangular platform or terrace circa 20 by 30 metres in size were visible as earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1982 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 to the south of Bartlett’s Farm, Weston, Awliscombe parish.
The curvilinear bank and ditch correspond to boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Awliscombe but not the OS First edition 25 inch map, and therefore have been interpreted as field boundaries passed out of use between circa 1840 and 1880. These boundaries have been transcribed to place the roughly rectangular platform or terrace in context; this is not depicted on the 19th century mapping available to the survey but appears to be partly defined by the northernmost of the relict boundaries. The boundaries fall within a field pattern characterised by HLC as medieval enclosure based on strip field, and the platform or terrace is interpreted as a possible building platform of similar date.
