A narrow curvilinear ditch up to circa 180 metres long and 4 metres wide was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as an earthwork on the north and north-east facing combe slopes Lower Cheriton, Feniton parish.
The ditch is interpreted as the gutter of a simple catch meadow irrigation system of probable 19th century date. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but probably were first used in the medieval period and many continued in use into the mid-20th century.
No evidence of water flowing down the slope was visible, and the gutter had probably therefore passed out of use prior to 1947. The ditch remains visible as subtle earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014.
