A roughly oval pit up to circa 90 by 50 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1989 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, it does partly correspond with a plot depicted on the Tithe Map for Buckerell (Plot 403) which although listed as arable, was named Chapless Pit. It also corresponds closely at its eastern end with plot 402, Buckerell Land Orchard. Relict pits were often utilised as orchards once they had passed out of use. This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.
