Full description

Prowse, A. B., 1892, The Bounds of the Forest of Dartmoor, 430 (Article in Serial). SDV273464.

New Bridge. A clapper bridge over the Black-a-ven Brook near East Mill Tor.

Ordnance Survey, 1963-1996, 1963-1996 National Grid OS Metric (Cartographic). SDV350058.

SX 59658989 New Bridge (NAT) (1965 edition.)

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1979, SX59SE19 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV214795.

(28/08/1979) Although a break is shown in the stream at the above reference on the OS 6" 1962, there is no bridge or culvert and no necessity for one.
Prowse is referring to that at SX 59629031, which has a central and two side piers each 1.4 m wide and 1.2 m high, with slabs and parallel post-type stones laid between them. The bridge is 7.2 m long and 5.2 m wide and now has a tarmac surface.
It is shown on the 1883 OS 6" but first named "New Bridge" on the 1907 edition. There is no sign of split or drilled stones having been used and the structure is possibly Medieval though of unusually large size. The bridge is in good condition and still called "New Bridge".
Surveyed at 1:10 000 on MSD.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project (Report - Survey). SDV346608.

(15/06/1993) SX 59629032. New bridge is generally as described in 1979 though a drill-split slab, probably a repair, now forms part of the decking on the western half of the structure.

Francis, P., 2002, Okehampton Artillery Range, 16 (Report - Survey). SDV359222.
