HER Number:MDV118143
Name:Relict Boundaries and Trackway in The Belt, Widworthy

Summary

Several linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches are visible on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. They are interpreted as relict field or woodland boundaries, perhaps overlying an earlier boundary or trackway, that went out of use by the late-19th century.

Several linear parallel banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, many with adjacent earthwork ditches. They are aligned approximately along the contour and in places they appear to cut across a curvilinear bank and ditch that runs broadly perpendicular to them. They are not depicted on the available historic mapping, and the ground surface is obscured by trees on the available aerial photographs. The linear features all seem to be cut by a curvilinear trackway that is visible as an earthwork hollow and depicted on the late-19th century mapping, suggesting that they pre-date this feature. The curvilinear earthwork is likely to be an earlier phase still. The linear earthworks are interpreted as relict boundary features, perhaps wood banks, which went out of use by the late-19th century. The curvilinear earthwork may have been an earlier field boundary or perhaps routeway.
