Narrow ridges were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The visible earthwork banks were spaced up to circa 8 metres apart and crossed the contours of the slope over an area of circa 0.5 hectares.
The visible earthworks fall across the boundary between plot 83 and 83a on the Tithe Map for Talaton, listed as Withy Moor Orchard and a plantation respectively on the Tithe Apportionments. The plot remained depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and was lightly planted on aerial photographs of 1946 and more densely planted by 1967.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for tree planting, probably apple trees, and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The plot remains heavily wooded on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
