Summary

The remains of ridges made for tree planting and improved drainage probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date, were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the west facing slopes west of Yellingham Farm, Payhembury parish.

The plot was listed as number plot 321, Lower Orchard.

Very low a subtle remains of parallel linear banks were visible as earthworks.

New orchard planting was visible in the plot to the east of the most identifiable bank earthworks.

The remains of parallel ridges were visible as earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The enclosure boundaries in this area have been remodelled but the visible banks fall within the area of a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map, which was listed as Plot 321, Lower Orchard on the Tithe map and apportionments for the historic parish of Feniton.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period to the 19th century.
The plot was cleared of planting in the mid- 20th century but the tree planting banks survive as very low and slight earthworks. An orchard has been re-established in the east of the plot on aerial photographs of 2010.
