An irregularly shaped pit circa 130 by 60 metres in size was visible as an earthwork through tree cover on aerial photograph of 1967 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but does correspond closely with the extent a small area of woodland named Blackpit Copse. The plot in which it is largely located is also named Black Pit on the Tithe Apportrionment for Talaton. This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
