An irregularly shaped pit circa 40 by 25 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any extractive pit explicitly depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, a pond is depicted on both the OS First Edition 25 inch map and Tithe map for Payhembury falling within the extent of the pit.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of a large extractive pit, probably a marl pit, that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was partly subsequently utilised as a pond. A pit remains depicted as a pond on the current OS MasterMap. The pond has been recorded separately as part of MDV113536 and the full extent of the pit has been transcribed and recorded by the survey.
