Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • ORCHARD (Post Medieval to XX - 1540 AD to 1989 AD (Between))

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Plot 810 is listed as an orchard.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks fall within a plot depicted as an orchard.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RS 4233-4234 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

The plot remained densely planted.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST0601 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

Linear east to west aligned low banks were visible as earthworks.

Next Perspectives, 2010, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST0601 22-MAY-2010 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356259.

The banks were not clearly identifiable as earthworks but the plot had been cleared of trees.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

The remains of parallel ridges circa 6 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.25ha on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The plot in which the banks were visible was listed as Plot 537, Mow Plot Orchard on the Tithe map and apportionments for Payhembury and was depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The banks were obscured from view by dense tree cover on digital images derived aerial photographs of 2010.
