Narrow, shallow and roughly parallel curvilinear ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1989 as subtle earthworks over nearly 0.1 hectares of gentle south-west facing slopes south of Lower Milton, overlooking the River Clyst.
The ditches are tentatively interpreted as the gutters of a possible catch meadow irrigation system. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. The gutters did not appear to have been recently used in 1946 and the system was probably out of use.
The possible gutters were not identifiable as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1967 and have probably been levelled.
