Summary

The remains of ridges made for tree planting and improved drainage probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946, in a plot now to the north of Langaton House, Payhembury parish.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with a plot depicted as an orchard; the former orchard enclosure boundaries have been cleared.

The remains of parallel ridges up to 7 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of less than circa 0.1ha on aerial photographs of 1946. The visible banks probably corresponded with Plot 802 on the Tithe map and apportionments for Payhembury, listed as Long Close, Orchard. The plot had been cleared and was not depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century that passed out of use by circa 1880.
The banks were not visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data and have probably been levelled.
