Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Plot 430 was named as Pit Close, under Farrantshayes estate.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with depicted pit in plot 430, but matched a curve in a field boundary.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The pit was not depicted.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1823, RAF/CPE/UK/1823 RS 4234-4235 04-NOV-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV354994.

A pit was visible as a subtle earthwork.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST0501 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A pit was visible as an earthwork.

Google, 2015, Google Earth Pro, EARTH.GOOGLE.COM XX-XXX-2002 ACCESSED 22-DEC-2016 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359580.

A pit was visible as a subtle earthwork.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregularly shaped pit over 100 metres long and nearly 60 metres wide was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, a diversion in the line of a field boundary depicted on the northern edge of plot 430 on the Tithe map for Clysts Hydon, named as Pit Close, probably respects a pre-existing earthwork pit.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive of probable post-medieval date that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
