Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregularly shaped pit circa 60 metres long and 25 metres wide was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. This pit is obscured from view by dense tree cover on all aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards.
The visible earthworks correspond with pit partly depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map, and a small enclosure within plot 837 on the Tithe map for Payhembury. This might equate to the part of that plot listed as coppice on the apportionments. Two ponds are depicted within the area of the pit on the historic OS map.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive pit of probable post-medieval date that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was subsequently partly reused as ponds.
The ponds are part of a group in this area that has been recorded as part of record MDV113536.
