Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An oval pit up to circa 110 metres long and 65 across was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1982 onwards and digital images derived from aerial lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but did correspond closely with a plot, Plot 533, named as an orchard on the Tithe Apportionment for Payhembury. The plot remained planted as an orchard on aerial photographs of 1947, but development had begun to encroach onto the plot by 1982.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was subsequently utilised as an orchard.
The plot was almost completely developed as housing by 2010.
