Summary

Several linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches are visible on aerial photographs taken from 2000 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. A curvilinear earthwork ditch is visible on aerial photographs taken from 2000 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. Its northern end seems to terminate at Widworthy Barton, and it is interpreted as the relict remains of a medieval hollow way that predated the establishment of the orchard (MDV118270). A narrower earthwork bank on its northern side may be the remains of a boundary. Several adjacent linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches may be contemporary, perhaps associated with the medieval settlement at Widworthy (MDV18790). However one of the ditches appears to cut through the hollow way so may be of a later phase, maybe associated with the ‘Old Marl Pit’ depicted on the late-19th century mapping at which one branch of one of the ditches terminates.
