Summary

The remains of ridges made for tree planting and improved drainage probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data acquired between 1998 and 2014, to the east of Monkton Park Farm, Payhembury parish.

Plot 222 was listed as an orchard named Coles's Orchard.

The visible earthworks correspond with a plot depicted as an orchard.

All trees had been cleared and the banks were clearly identifiable as earthworks.

The remains of parallel ridges circa 5 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.5 ha on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data acquired between 1998 and 2014.
The visible banks fell within Plot 222 on the Tithe map and apportionments for Payhembury, listed as Coles’s Orchard. It was depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First and Second Edition maps of circa 1880-90 and 1904-6, but had been subdivided on the north-west corner by this date. It was cleared all tree planting on aerial photographs of 1947.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The orchard had passed out of use and turned over to pasture in the first half of the 20th century.
