Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with a depicted pit. Irregular field boundaries respect the southern edge of the pit.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with a depicted pit, the southern half of the plot depicted as scrub vegetation and rough pasture.

Ordnance Survey, 1967, OS/67040, OS/67040 V 54-55 18-APR-1967 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356895.

A roughly oval pit was visible as an earthwork under tree cover.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST0503 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

The pit was visible as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A roughly oval pit circa 80 by 63 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. The northern half of the pit is significantly shallower than the southern.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the Tithe Map for Plymtree parish, but irregular field boundaries indicate that they were respecting an extant feature. The southern half of the pit is depicted as scrub and rough pasture on the OS First Edition map, a field boundary now enclosing the area defined by the irregular boundary to the south.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The northern half of the pit was absorbed into the field to the north between circa 1840 and 1880 was subsequently almost levelled.
