A possible post-medieval to 19th century extraction pit is visible as a slight earthwork cutting on aerial photographs of 1948 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the southwest of Clifthayne Farm, Yarcombe. The elongated shaped earthwork measures approximately 70m in length by 20m in width and is depicted as a copse on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. Earthwork field boundaries were recorded at either end of this possible pit, although it is unclear whether these skirt around, and so post-date the feature, or have been cut by it. Some caution should, however, be exercised and it is possible this earthwork is the result of natural erosion/ slippage along the southeast facing slopes here.
