A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1989 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the east of Kingsleigh, Upottery. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 60m in length by 40m in width. The earthwork corresponds with a copse depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the 1880’s-90’s, the trees probably being established within the pit following its abandonment. A mid to late 20th century pond shown here on the 2017 Ordnance Survey MasterMap truncates the western extent of the extractive pit.
