A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to late 19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards, and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the southeast of Watchford Farm, Yarcombe. The sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 60m in length by 35m in width. A number of ‘Old Clay Pits’ are depicted in the vicinity here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the 1880’s-90’s, so it seems possible this pit was similarly utilised for such. The visible earthwork did not, however, correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the late 19th century. The Parish Tithe map mosaic of approximately 1838-48 is incomplete here, so it is not possible to determine whether the extractive pit was extant by this time.
