An earthwork platform of between medieval to late 19th century date is visible on aerial photographs of 1948 and 1971, at Old Woodhayne Farm, Yarcombe. The well-defined raised earthwork is rectilinear in shape, measures approximately 30m in length by 18m in width and is located on the southern side of the farm. It is possibly the site of a former structure or building associated with Old Woodhayne Farm (MDV105493), or perhaps with the iron smelting site (MDV56247) located in the adjacent plot to the west. The visible earthworks do not, however, correspond with any such feature depicted in this location on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the 1880’s-90’s. This supports the interpretation that any such building or structure had passed out of use prior to the late 19th century. The Parish Tithe map mosaic is incomplete here, so it is not possible to determine whether the building or structure was extant by this time. The earthwork platform is not visible on aerial photographs after 1971, or digital images and its survival is uncertain.
