A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards, and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the northeast of Lower Luxton, Upottery. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 93m in length by 84m in width. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the 1880’s-90’s, the fruit trees probably being established within the pit following its abandonment. This supports the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the late 19th century.
