Ss85002591 to ss87102617. The devon and somerset railway company was formed in 1864 to establish this rail link between barnstaple and taunton. The railway was originally broad gauge but was converted to the standard gauge in 1881. In 1901 the line was taken over by the gwr - it was closed in october 1966 (bone).

The act for the laying of the railway between norton fitzwarren, and barnstaple was passed on 29 july 1864, but owing to a crisis in 1866, the first train didn't reach barnstaple until 1 november 1873. The line was converted to standard gauge in 1881 and a spur to the lswr at barnstaple junction was opened on 1 june 1887. The ailing devon and somerset railway was absorbed in 1901. The line reached it's peak in the mid thirties but steadily declined until the mid 1960s and closed on 3 october 1966 (nmr, citing thomas).
