HER Number:MDV118759
Name:Archaeological anomalies to south of Hemerdon Plantation, Sparkwell

Summary

A number of anomalies were recorded to the south of Hemerdon Plantation during a geophysical survey on the route of a water main. Subsequent excavation recorded a ditch which appeared to align with the extant field system and a large spread of stony material that coincided with a ferrous geophysical anomaly said to be the site of a geotechnical compound.

Full description

Urmston, Ben, 2008, Avon Support Main, between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV358939.

A geophysical survey was undertaken of a proposed 13km water main between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. Several sites of archaeological interest were identified. Two complexes of enclosures of clear archaeological potential have been identified, one to the east of Boringdon Camp, a known Iron Age site, and another to the west of Sparkwell. The former comprises two curvilinear enclosures with good evidence for internal features; the latter is rectilinear in form.
Linear anomaly 4047 appears to be a former continuation of the extant boundary to the north, with other anomalies nearby of possible archaeological interest. A complex of rectilinear and amorphous anomalies 4048 may also be of interest, although it is not clear if any of these anomalies are associated. To the west of 4048, a short linear anomaly characteristic of a former boundary extends from the southern border of the survey towards the ferrous response surrounding a geotechnical compound; this anomaly has been interpreted on its form alone, perhaps making its archaeological interest less sure.

Taylor, S. R., 2009, Avon SWW Pipeline, Devon: Archaeological Mitigation Archive report, 22, Fig. 13 (Report - Assessment). SDV364052.

A ditch, which appears to be the same as that recorded in the geophysical survey, was identified in Area G6. It appears to align with the extant field system and was not excavated.
A large spread of stony material to the east coincided with a ferrous geophysical anomaly said to be the site of a geotechnical compound.
