Full description
Urmston, Ben, 2008, Avon Support Main, between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV358939.
A geophysical survey was undertaken of a proposed 13km water main between Roborough and Houndall, near Plymouth, Devon. Several sites of archaeological interest were identified. Two complexes of enclosures of clear archaeological potential have been identified, one to the east of Boringdon Camp, a known Iron Age site, and another to the west of Sparkwell. The former comprises two curvilinear enclosures with good evidence for internal features; the latter is rectilinear in form.
A complex of linear anomalies 4057 may be the remnants of a former boundary or field system. Numerous ferrous anomalies towards the western extent of this area have a coherent distribution, perhaps reflecting its current use as a horse paddock.
Taylor, S. R., 2009, Avon SWW Pipeline, Devon: Archaeological Mitigation Archive report, 23, Fig. 15 (Report - Assessment). SDV364052.
A pair of ditches [1728] and [1732] was identified in Area G10 which corresponded with an anomaly recorded in the geophysical survey. Both were 0.9m wide and 0.2m deep and aligned north-west to south-east, in common with extant field boundaries.
To the east of these, was another ditch [1724], 0.94m wide and 0.39m deep, which was also recorded on the geophysical survey. It was aligned west-north-west to east-south-east and is presumed to pre-date the current field system. It was cut by a shallow gully [1726] running north-east to south-west.
