A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, to the northeast of Purchas Farm, Culmstock. The sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 41m in length by 32m in width and is situated within the corner of an agricultural field, adjacent to Black Down Common. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
