Former extractive pits of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1971 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, to the east of Chapel Farm, Hemyock. The cluster of five earthworks are sub-circular to sub-oval in shape and measure between 15m to 40m in length and between 10m to 32m in width. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. An ‘Old Gravel Pit’ (MDV35096) is, however, depicted within the group of earthworks, which gives good indication as to the likely function of these pits. A larger pit was also visible to the northeast (MDV118890), although given its size and possible different function was recorded as a separate monument.
