A former post-medieval to 19th century extractive pit later utilised during the 19th century as an orchard are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, to the northwest of Greywalls Copse, Hemyock. The extractive pit is irregular in shape and measures approximately 76m in length by 50m in width. The earthworks are located within plot 130 which is recorded as ‘Pit Orchard’ on the digital Tithe Map and Apportionment of between 1838-48, which suggests by this time the extractive pit had passed out of use and the redundant earthwork instead utilised as an orchard. A series of linear northeast to southwest aligned banks within the former extractive pit is likely evidence of this re-use, the fruit trees being established on the banks for both increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard banks remain visible up until 1971 and their present day survival is uncertain, whilst the former extractive pit is visible on lidar images.
