Possible tree-planting banks of former post-medieval to 19th century orchards are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2016, at Tarbuddle, Culmstock. An orchard is depicted here on the Culmstock Parish Tithe map of 1838-48. Aerial photographs of 1947 show that the orchard trees have been partly cleared, leaving a series of parallel northwest to southeast aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.92 hectares of northwest facing slope, within two adjacent plots shown on the Parish Tithe map. Only part of the possible orchard banks are, however, actually shown as an orchard on historic maps, suggesting that much of the former orchards had been cleared by the mid-19th century.
