Full description
South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.
The earthworks correspond with Plot 81 on the Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as ‘Young Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment.

Possible tree-planting banks of probable post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, to the southeast of Upcott Farm, Culmstock. An orchard is depicted here on the Parish Tithe Map of 1838-48 within Plot 81 which is recorded as ‘Young Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. The earthworks, on which the fruit trees were established for improved drainage and increased soil depth are broadly east to west aligned and occupy an area of approximately 0.16 hectares of west facing slope.
