A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1971 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, to the southeast of Upcott Farm, Culmstock. The sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 38m in length by 27m in width and is located in an area where a number of similar such features have been recorded during this survey. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
