An irregularly shaped earthwork pit, circa 40 by 55 metres, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. It is not depicted on any available historic mapping and is interpreted as a post-medieval or nineteenth century extractive pit.

A broadly square dipolar anomaly (Group 21) recorded during a geophysical survey may represent the backfilling of the pit. The survey was carried out over three fields to the west of Chard Road on the north-east edge of Axminster in advance of a planning application.
