Summary

Site of a medieval manor house. The present building has been much altered. The only visible portion of a previous building is a detached hut to the north-east which has pointed arched windows and doorway.

Pickwell was Pediccheswella in Domesday [1086]. It was held by Drogo of the Bishop of Coutances. Before the conquest it was held by Ulf. Early descents given.

Site visits 30th September and 2nd October 1953. Pickwell Manor, remains of a Manor House. A large demesne, held by Robert de Pidekeswell in the reign of Henry III. Held by the Newsome and later, in the 17th century, the Harris family. The house contains a considerable amount of old fabric. Now a hotel, known as Pickwell Manor. It has been much altered since the 1905 6 inch Ordnance Survey map. The only visible portion of a previous building is a detached hut, now a storehouse, to the north-east which has pointed arch windows and doorway.
