Parallel linear earthwork banks, approximately 3.5 metres in width, are visible on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and indistinctly on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. Their broadly cross-contour orientation is indicative of post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks, and orchard is depicted in this location on the 19th century maps. Scattered trees are visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s and the earthworks are interpreted as orchard banks that fell out of use in the 20th century.
Dean, R., 2018, Land at east of Axminster, Devon: Geophysical Survey (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV361775.
This report presents the results of an archaeological geophysical survey at the site. The survey was commissioned by AC Archaeology Ltd on behalf of clients in support of a planning application.
Anomaly group 104 represents post-medieval orchard banks recorded on aerial photograph and lidar images.
