An irregular earthwork, pit circa 35 by 95 metres, is visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. It is not depicted on the available historic mapping and it is interpreted as a post-medieval or early nineteenth century extractive pit. It may be a phase of chalk extraction of which a later phase is represented by the ‘Old Chalk Pits’ depicted on historic mapping on the other side of the watercourse to the north (MDV70580).
