Linear and curvilinear banks up to 5 metres wide were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as low earthworks on the north-east facing slopes overlooking Birch Oak farm, Yarcombe parish from the south.
Visible to the north and south of the road, the earthworks did not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. Although falling largely within a field pattern that has been characterised as being post-medieval enclosure, the relict banks were broadly in keeping with the curvilinear boundaries shown on the OS First Edition map to the east (recorded partly as MDV114924), which have been characterised as being derived from strip fields of medieval date.
They have therefore been interpreted as the remains of former field boundaries probably of medieval date that were removed prior to the mid-19th century.
