A burial pit was discovered in the cliff face south of Barricane Beach in 1938. The pit contained black ash, charcoal and calcined bones with two burnt sea shells and larger pieces of bone on top with burnt sandy gravel above this.

Full description

Taylor, H. + Taylor, E. E., 1946-52, Untitled Source, 85-87, Plan (Article in Serial). SDV59288.

A burial pit was discovered in september 1938 in the cliff face south of Barricane Beach. No barrow mound etc visible. The top of pit was splayed outwards, coated with a burnt clay layer. Walls and floor of pit not burnt. Dimensions 1ft 4in deep, 2ft 7in by 1ft 9in in plan at 5in depth. Contained mixed black ash, charcoal, calcined bones, with two burnt sea shells and larger pieces of bone on top, with burnt sandy gravel above this. Probable Early Bronze Age date.

A burial pit was discovered in the cliff face south of Barricane Beach in 1938. The pit was 1ft 4ins deep and 2ft 7ins by 1ft 9ins wide. The pit contained a heap of black ash, charcoal and calcined human bone on top of which were two burnt sea shells and some larger pieces of bone. The pit was dated to the Early-Middle Bronze Age.
