Roughly parallel linear and curvilinear banks up to 5 metres wide were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as low earthworks on the north-east facing slopes overlooking Birch Oak Farm, Yarcombe parish from the south.
The earthworks did not correspond with any features depicted on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. Although falling largely within a field pattern that has been characterised as being post-medieval enclosure, the relict banks were more closely in keeping with the character of probably earlier curvilinear boundaries recorded by the survey immediately to the north, which have been interpreted as boundaries derived from strip fields of medieval date. The parallel and slightly braided nature of the relict earthworks recorded here are more in keeping with a routeway, and have been interpreted as the remains of a former trackway probably of medieval origin.
