Curvilinear banks up to 4 metres wide were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar captured in in 2014 and 2016 as subtle earthworks east of Gilletts Farm, Membury parish.
The visible earthworks do not match any boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and had therefore passed out of use by the late 19th century. They were broadly in keeping with the historic character of the field pattern to the west of the farm, characterised as based on medieval strip fields. The relict banks have been interpreted as evidence of former field boundaries of medieval origin, although the survival of narrow ridge and furrow within the former enclosures, probably evidence of agricultural improvement, might support the interpretation that the enclosures remained in use into the post-medieval or modern period.
