Summary

The visible earthworks fall within a plot depicted and listed as an orchard, and pasture.

The remains of parallel ridges up to circa 5 metres apart were visible as very earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.5 ha on aerial photographs of 1946.
The visible banks fell within a larger plot depicted as an orchard depicted on the Tithe Map for Membury, but not the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period to the mid-19th century. The orchard had been cleared of trees by the mid-1940s. The orchard was located on the site of an old marl pit. The banks were not identifiable as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014 and have probably been levelled.
