Name:Probable former orchard north of Lugg’s Farm, Yarcombe parish

Summary

The remains of parallel ridges were visible as low earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the north of Lugg’s Farm, Yarcombe parish. The banks were probably made for improved drainage in the post-medieval to mid-19th century date, possibly for orchard tree planting.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

The remains of parallel ridges up to 5 metres apart were visible as very subtle earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.2 ha on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
The visible banks fell within a larger plot depicted as an orchard depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The orchard remained very lightly planted in 2014.
