Summary

The remains of parallel ridges were visible as low earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, on the north-west-facing slopes between Pit Close and Round Pit copse, Yarcombe parish. The banks were probably made to improve drainage in the post-medieval to mid-19th century date, and possibly for orchard tree planting.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

The remains of parallel ridges up to circa 11 metres apart were visible as earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.75ha on aerial photographs of 1996 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
The visible banks fell within a plot depicted as an orchard on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century.
